Girl Scouts of America

In 1912, Juliette Gordon Low organized the first Girl Scout troop in Savannah, GA , an outdoor, educational, and service-oriented program for girls. Today, Girl Scouts of the United States of America is made up of more than 1.7 million girls and 750,000 adult leaders. Annually, Girl Scouts creates a bipartisan federal legislative agenda addressing opportunities for girls including economic opportunity through entrepreneurial and financial literacy and skills. Chapters celebrate the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with poverty education and community-based volunteerism. Additionally, Girl Scouts can work to earn the annual Global Action Award by working towards the 2015 Global Goals for Sustainable Development (SDGs). In 2019, the award focused on SDG 1: No poverty, meaning that members studied the impact of poverty on their communities and the world, and took action to address poverty in their communities.
