On February 7, 2024, we held our first student-driven poverty forum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

At the UNC-CH Poverty Forum, participants:

  • Discussed how students planning to enter all sectors could take action to end poverty.

Participant Feedback from the UNC-Chapel Hill Poverty Forum

  • "I think the forum contradicted my previous understanding on how the US measures poverty. I had no idea that the poverty line is historically outdated, and how many people cannot beat the system, nor how little action is being taken to dismantle the system. I think that The Shared Humanity Project is a really insightful project, nonprofit, and lesson— I hope it continues to expand!"

Nichole Li, UNC-CH Class of 2027

  • "The UNC poverty forum made me realize how antiquated some measurements of poverty are today and why we need to rethink how we define poverty. I was also inspired to think creatively about how students in any field can work to alleviate poverty."

Jonathan Osborne, UNC-CH Class of 2024

  • "I've never felt as though the issue of poverty was so solvable until I attended the UNC poverty forum."

Bharat Raghavan, UNC-CH Class of 2024

  • "The Shared Humanity Project has made me totally rethink how we approach, visualize, and understand poverty in the US. I was honored to be able to present to my peers the data on the issue, and engage in conversations about how we could take what we were learning in our lecture halls and classrooms and apply it to solving our national poverty crisis."

Ning Soong, SHP Research Assistant and UNC-CH Class of 2024
