Establish a local farmers market

Access to healthy food has long been a problem for individuals and families living below the NPPS.

Establish a farmers market to increase access to nutritious and local fresh foods, or volunteer with an existing market to serve those living below the NPPS.

To get started:

  1. Research the steps involved in starting a farmers market, using the resources below.

  2. Work with community members to determine the neighborhood's food needs and best location for service.

  3. Identify additional funding sources including grant funding.

  4. Promote the market and remind individuals that markets usually accept SNAP and WIC benefits as a form of payment.

Best Practices / Innovative Programs

The Massachusetts government's guide to running a farmers market provides a comprehensive guide to starting and operating a farmers market.

The Farmer’s Market Promotion Program (FMPP) funds projects that help increase access and availability of locally and regionally grown agricultural products. The program provides training and assistance for various food enterprises including domestic farmers markets, roadside stands, and community-supported agriculture programs.
