Establish a mentorship program
The health care field can be particularly competitive and require many years of education and experience, which makes it especially difficult for individuals to pursue while also living with the stress of economic hardship.
Establish a mentoring program between health care workers and students living below the NPPS who aspire to work in the health care sector.
To get started:
Identify schools in your community with which you can partner to help students pursue health care careers.
Seek individuals on your staff to serve as mentors.
Reach out to students to share information on jobs in the health care industry.
Organize career days and other events to highlight positions, externships, or to highlight opportunities to shadow staff.
Best Practices / Innovative Programs
The Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center operates the High School Senior Summer Internship program, a local, 8-week, paid internship for high school seniors to learn about careers in medicine and clinical research while working with a mentor.
The University of Alaska WWAMI School of Medical Education operates the Della Keats Health Sciences Summer Program. In this free program, select high school juniors and seniors get to explore the industry to help them determine their interest in the healthcare profession.
