Provide research support to community safety efforts

High rates of violence have a disproportionate impact on students in poverty. Inequities in public safety, in turn, impact employment, education, and a range of other opportunities that make it difficult to break the cycle of poverty.

Collaborate with community leaders to pursue evidence-based solutions to violence.

To get started:

  1. Engage faculty and students in designing action research in partnership with residents, neighborhoods leaders, and other key stakeholders.

  2. Collaborate with other higher education institutions, to secure funding for research, design, implementation, and evaluation.

  3. Communicate findings at every stage.

Best Practices / Innovative Programs

John Jay University invests in crime reduction strategies such as Group Violence Intervention (GVI) that seeks to reduce homicide and gun violence through shifting action from enforcement to deterrence.

The University of Chicago Urban Labs provides analysis of programs that seek to reduce crime and violence through partnerships with community stakeholders.
