Ensure culturally competent and patient-centric approaches

Fear and misunderstanding are disproportionately present in the care for individuals and families living below the NPPS.

Invest in educational and professional development opportunities to help your teams and organization to build stronger relationships with your patients and their families through culturally competent and patient-involved care.

To get started:

  1. Provide cultural competency trainings for all employees.

  2. Encourage providers to utilize shared decision-making tools/aids that involve patient input.

  3. Request feedback from those involved to ensure that programs are having intended results.

Best Practices / Innovative Programs

Georgetown University's National Center for Cultural Competence aims to increase the capacity of health care and mental health care programs to design, implement, and evaluate culturally and linguistically competent service delivery systems.

Cigna provides cultural competency training courses for providers in order to increase clinical and cultural awareness.
