Advocate for affordable housing
Affordable housing and development policies are essential to ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to live in their community.
Play an active role in shaping housing policies and working with the local government to ensure options exist for individuals and families living below the NPPS. Connect residents with government officials and developers to shape and uphold affordable housing policies.
To get started:
Collect feedback from community members who are unable to afford housing. Use surveys, in-person interviews, or community town halls.
Write letters to or call elected officials with the concerns and ideas of community members.
Attend public meetings to advocate for affordable housing policies.
Best Practices / Innovative Programs
The Brookland Civic Association in Washington, DC advocates on multiple topics affecting the members of their community. As an association, they formally share opinions on neighborhood development, write letters to government officials about housing policies, and connect with residents and business owners to understand what is happening in the community.
The Beacon Hill Civic Association has regularly advocated for buildings in its neighborhoods to be renovated and maintained as affordable apartments rather than luxury apartments. They have formed fundraising committees and work closely with city developers to ensure those apartments stay affordable.
