This week’s featured Actions
In advance of this September’s launch, here are some sample solutions
from the business, faith, health care, government, and civic sectors.
Stay tuned for more actions and more sectors in the coming weeks!
Build partnerships to prevent gentrification
Work with community members, developers, and local government on solutions that prevent displacement of residents and ensure affordable housing for those living below the NPPS.
Reduce barriers to home ownership
Invest in low-risk opportunities for buyers below the NPPS who would not otherwise be able to access credit and other resources to buy a home.
Invest in eviction prevention
Eviction prevention is far more cost-efficient (for the jurisdictions more so than families, themselves) than finding housing and other support for families that have been evicted.
Fund holistic housing models
Invest in partnerships for mixed income residences that have a holistic social service model.
Fund creative housing solutions
Invest in creative housing solutions. Examples include building housing out of shipping containers, pre-fab tiny houses and 3D printed homes for those seeking an alternative to homelessness.
Advise on and advocate for programs that effectively end homelessness
Inform leaders across sectors on programs that are and are not effective in supporting the rise out of homelessness.
Form a Tenants Association to Represent Renter’s Rights
Develop a community of tenants or neighbors to advocate for each other’s housing rights, organize repair and maintenance services, and work towards affordable home ownership.
Support families pursuing home ownership
Invest in a wide array of programs, including home ownership loans, technical assistance, manufactured homes, and community land trusts.
Set up a utility assistance program
Use your connections and resources to ensure families do not lose their homes or are not forced to live without heat, light, or gas.
Adopt a Housing First approach
Build partnerships across sectors to support the obtaining and retaining of housing for individuals and families as they start to rise out of poverty.
Volunteer your time to help build affordable housing
Donate your time to help with housing construction for families living below the NPPS.
Support a local community land trust
Donate to or volunteer with a community land trust to help provide housing to Americans experiencing poverty.
Donate land for affordable housing
For individuals with the means to do so, donate land that can be used for affordable housing for individuals or families below the NPPS.
Provide mobile services to individuals experiencing homelessness
Deliver on-site critical health services to help combat episodic and chronic homelessness.
Invest in the development of affordable housing
Join with health care companies across the country that have already experienced the benefits of building affordable housing.
