Create and maintain play spaces for children
Play increases children's developmental skills such as creativity and problem solving and contributes to overall well-being. Yet in many low-income communities, there is a scarcity of safe places in which to play.
Establish partnerships with residents in communities where play spaces are needed, connecting cross-sectorally to bring in businesses and others that are part of your group's network.
To get started:
Reach out to community members for feedback on what types of healthy outdoor play spaces they need or desire.
Identify locations where land can be used for play spaces and other community-centered programs.
Research partnership options that will help guide and support the initiative.
Work with other stakeholders, to include government agencies for help with permitting, philanthropic organizations for funding, and local businesses for equipment.
Best Practices / Innovative Programs
The Rotary Club of Sturbridge Massachusetts built a playground in coordination with the YMCA to provide a safe space for youth participating in YMCA programming.
KABOOM! is a nonprofit organization that works across the U.S. to build or improve play spaces for children in communities lacking safe places to play. They work directly with community members, including children, to understand their unique needs and desires and offer grants to help communities obtain the necessary funding.
