Provide transportation assistance to employees

Individuals living in lower-income areas often have limited access to public transportation and spend excessive time and money commuting to and from work, often resulting in their being unable to keep the job.

Offer assistance such as free transportation passes, shuttle services, ride shares, and research vehicle donation programs to reduce the cost of getting to and from work for employees living below the NPPS. Providing reliable transportation to work can increase employee timeliness and productivity.

To get started:

  1. Build partnerships with transportation entities to secure reduced-rate or transportation passes for government employees living below the NPPS.

  2. Offer shuttle transportation between your agency and large public transit stations.

  3. Partner with ride share companies to subsidize the cost for employees.

  4. Connect with vehicle donation programs that provide access to vehicles in areas where other forms of transportation are not a viable option.

  5. Offer qualified transportation costs as a fringe benefit to allow for pre-tax treatment.

Best Practices / Innovative Programs

Lyft’s Jobs Access Program  is designed to provide free or discounted rides to individuals in job training programs, traveling to job interviews, and for the first few weeks of employment until the employee receives their first paycheck.

Vehicles for Change is an example of partnering with a nonprofit that helps low-income families get cars.
